A photograph of the IceCube Laboratory Building in Antarctica

IceCube is a neutrino detector situated right at the South Pole in Antarctica. The station is only accessible by plane for about 3 summer months per year. The rest of the year 2 "winterovers" from IceCube live in the station together with about 40 other people from other experiments and keep IceCube running.

In this lab tour, we will meet the winterovers live. The local time at South Pole is 12h ahead and internet via satellite is only available for few hours per day. In order to have a reliable internet connection, this lab tour is therefore scheduled in German night time.

In this lab tour, we will give

  • a tour of South Pole station
  • an intro to the IceCube experiment
  • discuss living in Antarctica
  • answer all your questions
